Four stand-out differences between Interior design & décor

So you have decided to take on a career in interior design and you seem to be stuck in your choice of specialization. You begin to look for potential programs that will best describe the career paths you can embark upon. As you look closer, you find ‘Interior Design’ and ‘Interior Decoration’ to have been highly used. Suddenly you have thrown into another dilemma – What is the difference? And most important – which one should you pick. More often than not, interior decoration and design are heavily misunderstood the same and sometimes, experts use these terms interchangeably. Surprisingly, there are many differences between these two terms, although the popular opinion may state otherwise. Hence, to give a clearer idea on these, this blog will widely cover the differences between interior design and décor.

      Qualification

Interior design is a rising profession where people are required to have a specific school and relevant training. The industry allows people to learn the study of colour, material, fabric, CAD (computer-aided design) training, furniture design, space planning and architecture. On the other hand, there is no formal training required to become an interior decorator. This is because; interior decorators often focus on the aesthetics of the space rather than getting involved in the intricate designs. Hence, many companies and corporations prefer interior designers as they have an academic background to support their growing career.

      Credentials

For people to find good employment opportunities in the lines of interior designing, professionals are expected to complete projects and assignments. This, in turn, gives them the added value to support their vision and dream to become successful interior designers. On the other hand, since interior decorators are considered more on the overall look of the space, credentials are often not associated with this profession. Although people have an edge when they earn credentials, it is not mandatory, unlike the interior design stream.

      What they do

Good interior designers are very comfortable with spatial planning, producing designs and creating renovations that are in line with the client’s requirements or needs. From drawing floor plans to finding the last decorative accent, interior designers are experts in enhancing the look and the overall functionality of the room. On the contrary, decorators are skilled at creating a visual shape when they enter a room. They are expected to help clients decide on the kind of style, colour, furniture and other décors that will accessorize the room. Decorators are often hired to tidy, update or redo the space.

      Who do they work for

Interior designers work closely with contractors, corporations and architects to achieve the client’s aim and delve into diverse types of design including residential homes, hotels, offices, entertainment spaces, schools, public places and much more. On the other hand, interior decorators do not generally work with architects or other contractors as these structural works are completed well before they are hired. However, they do work with upholsterers, furniture makers and other industry professionals. Many times, you would even find them freelancing.

Well, it has been established how technical and diverse a profession like interior design can be. We at Capital Education offer Professional Diploma in Interior Design where you will earn an international qualification from London College of Arts which will support you to venture successfully into this creative industry.
